You Think Your Hybrid Battery Died? Read the Codes First.

What should you do first?

1. Get the codes. The cheapest way is to do it yourself with an OBD2 reader, or have them read for free at AutoZone or O'Reilly's.
2. Call or text us. Year, make, model, ZIP, and the codes. Or the quote form. We'll give you a no-nonsense diagnosis over the phone and discuss options for your particular situation — based on your make, model, mileage and personal goals with the vehicle.

How do you get the codes?

Dash lights are a warning. They are not a diagnosis. An OBD2 reader is how we know if it's the hybrid battery or something else.

• Free at AutoZone or O'Reilly — start here if you have one close. Tell them you have dashboard lights on and politely ask them if they'll read the codes for you.
• Your own OBD2 reader (list below if you want to order one)
• You can bring us the car or we can come to you (scheduled, and for a diagnostic fee)
• The dealer (for a diagnostic fee)

A reader you can order

Skip the $12 "ELM327 Mini" clones. They often pair and still miss codes — and they will not read ABS (anti-lock brake) codes.

But you're also not buying a full tablet for a mechanic's shop. Most people need to pull codes once or twice, write them down, and call. What we recommend: the cheapest Autel that still reads ABS.

Here are three options on Amazon (prices may change):

• Autel AutoLink AL619 — $99.99. Our pick. Check-engine plus ABS and SRS (airbag). Handheld.
• ANCEL BD200 Pro — $76.99. ABS/SRS over Bluetooth. Fine if you only need codes once or twice.
• Innova 5410 — $161.99. ABS, SRS, engine, and transmission. More coverage if you want it.

ABS and hybrid coverage still vary by year and make. If the car is drivable, skip Amazon — and get a free scan at AutoZone or O'Reilly's.

Which codes mean it's the hybrid battery pack?

P0A80 is the principal code we're looking for in a Toyota, but it's not unique to Toyota either. Many Honda and Ford hybrids throw it too — it's a shared SAE code that means "replace hybrid battery pack." Codes can still vary by year and model.

Toyota / Lexus — P0A80; often with P0A7F; P3011–P3024 (a weak block)

Honda (newer HEV) — P0A80 on many Insight, CR-V, and Accord Hybrids

Honda (older IMA) — P1449 and P1570. Civic Hybrid, older Insight, CR-Z. P1449 is an umbrella — the sub-code matters.

Ford — P0A80 and P0A7F on Escape Hybrid and other Ford HEVs

Hyundai / Kia — P0A80 / P0A7F plus their own family: P1A2E, P1B70, P1B74, P1B96. The P1Bxx set is often a sensor or imbalance issue. The pack is not always the fix.

But don't shop a pack off one code either! There are a few other issues that can trip those.

Who does the work?

The dealer will often quote a new pack and a tow. A national dispatcher hands you to a third party.

We're a locally owned Indiana shop. Not a dispatch network. Drive to Noblesville (just North of Indianapolis) or we come to you when the car qualifies.

If it won't move, we can take a tow, but be sure to arrange and schedule it first. Don't send a truck unannounced.
